May 28 is celebrated Armenia as the Day of First Republic. On May 28, 1918, the Armenian National Council announced the establishment of the independent Republic of Armenia.
Republic Day has been officially celebrated since 1992. It is a symbol of the rebirth of Armenian state. On this day Armenian authorities traditionally visit Sardarapat Monument.
Defeating the Turkish army in Sardarapat, the Armenian troops were able to stop the Turkish invasion of Transcaucasia and save Armenia from complete destruction. On May 28, 1918, the Armenian National Council declared the Republic of Armenia.
The Republic of Armenia lasted only two years, until December 2, 1920. After the entry of the military units of the 11th Red Army into Yerevan, the republic became Soviet.
