Known locally as Zontikner or Mamrot Kar (mossy stone), water cascades over a dome-shaped mossy overhang deep in the Hunot Canyon, giving the appearance of an umbrella in the rain.
To get to the waterfall, start in the village of Karintak, located just below the Shushi Plateau. From here, you’ll be able to look up at the imposing cliff that has protected the town of Shushi from invasion for centuries. As you descend into the Hunot Canyon, taking in the gorgeous views, you’ll arrive at a medieval footbridge that crosses the Karkar River. Follow the river to arrive at the Umbrella Waterfall. There are lots of pools that are perfect for a dip, and several areas near the waterfall ideal for a picnic.
After a swim, you can explore the abandoned flour mills of Hunot village, founded in the 18th century. This village used the power of the river to provide flour to Shushi through the beginning of the 20th century. After you’re done exploring, begin your ascent out of the canyon to Shushi. There are a ton of cultural activities to do in town. Check out the Ghazanchetsots Church, Green Church, and the recently restored Govhar Agha Mosque, and the museums of History, Geology, Fine Arts, and Money while in town.
