Try Armenia’s “Best Homemade Wine”

Basic Info

The rediscovery in 2011 of a 6,000-year-old winery in the Areni-1 cave bolstered a new generation of winemakers in Armenia, which is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. According to Genesis, Noah got drunk on wine in the mountains of Ararat; and Urartu kings in the eighth century BCE referred to Armenia as the “land of the vineyards.”

The family behind Momik Wines has been growing and producing wine from the Areni grape for more than forty years. These grapes grow on the family’s land just outside Arenia village, in soil that is rich in limestone and calcium, which not only sweetens the grapes, but also eliminates the need for artificial feritilizers. The results are quality wines, one of which was named “best homemade wine” at the Areni Wine Festival in 2011.
